Fighting hunger in your community can be fun and that’s exactly what the Culpepper Landing community in Chesapeake had this weekend at a free block party brought to them for their hunger fighting efforts.
Walmart partnered with Nextdoor to put on the event in celebration of Culpepper Landing’s support of the “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” campaign led by Walmart, Feeding America and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. The campaign runs from April 2 to April 30 and benefits Feeding America, a network of 200 local food banks.
Before the block party, a “Neighbors Table” discussion was held with representatives from Walmart, the Chesapeake Police Department, the Healthy Chesapeake program and more community members. The CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols facilitated the discussion.
The block party included a taco truck, music and games for the family and was free and open to the public.
“This was a fantastic event and we have received such great feedback from the participants,” said Nichols in a press release. “There’s a strong consensus that we should continue the conversation at community tables throughout our service area and we are committed to doing just that.”
