How about a little fun, fellowship, fishing and great wine to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research? If that sounds like a great summer event, check out the 14th Annual Wine, Women and Fishing Charity Billfish Tournament (WWF) at Southside Marina at Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach coming up August 21. This ladies-only tournament has raised more than $450,000 for breast cancer research at the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS).
Linda Church, the chairwoman for the event has been involved since the very beginning, “At first, I was doing it because I wanted to give back to the community and it was the right thing to do.” Then it became a bit more personal for Church after her best friend, Debbi Bunn, passed away from breast cancer 10 years ago. Church tells me that a lot of the money is donated to EVMS in her friend’s name to honor her memory.
Whether you are an experienced angler or just starting out, you can participate in this event. Church says, “even if you’ve never fished before, it’s not intimidating at all.” Registration is $800 per team for up to six lady anglers on a boat (entry fee does not include boat).
If fishing isn’t your thing, that’s ok! Head out to the Southside Marina for a great night on the water at the dock party after the tournament for some fabulous wine, great food, and entertainment. All proceeds benefit breast cancer research at EVMS.
- Friday August 19 – Trefethen Wine Dinner hosted by Bill and Joni Greene and Earlene Coyner featuring special guest Janet Trefethen. The event will be catered by Zoes Restaurant. Tickets $195, limited to 200 people
- Saturday August 20 – Registration & Captain’s Meeting
- Sunday August 21 – Dock Party featuring the music of Guava Jam. Tickets: $75 in advance and $85 at the door
Want to participate, but don’t have a team. No worries? Contact Linda Church at firstname.lastname@example.org or 757-288-4842 and she will find a team for you! If you can’t make it out to the event this year, but would still like to donate to breast cancer research at EVMS, you can make a donation online (scroll to the bottom and look for the donate button).
The WWF is just one of the great events put on each year by the Cheseapeake Bay Wine Classic. The Foundation’s largest annual event is coming up on November 12 at Eleanor and Bob Stanton’s home overlooking the Lynnhaven River and Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach. The 26th annual Grand Auction promises to be the best one yet! The Grand Auction raised more than $1.3 million last year.
