On Wednesday, July 29th the Saltwater Cowboys will swim the ponies from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island. This area of the Eastern Shore is known for its wild horses and natural beauty, and the annual Pony Swim is a chance for the rest of the world to peek in on this long standing tradition.
Every year the swim takes place at “slack tide”. Slack tide is a period of about 30 minutes between tides, when there is no current. It’s estimated that this year, the swim will happen between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
The Chincoteague Ponies will swim across the Assateague Channel, just south of Memorial Park on the east side of Chincoteague Island. It’s a free event, but every year it’s very popular so parking at the park is exclusively for handicapped access.
If you’re coming from other parts of Hampton Roads, you can still park and see the ponies. There is a free shuttle picking up at Chincoteague Combined School located at 4586 Main St. Chincoteague Island, VA 23336.
