Celebrate “Get Outdoors Day” in Hampton Roads

Today is “Get Outdoors Day!”

As always, Virginia State Parks show up in fine style with some fun and inexpensive or free programs to get you and your kids outdoors and moving. For a complete list of Virginia State Park Programs, click here. 

Here are some events going on in our State Parks here in Hampton Roads. What are you doing to get outside on Get Outdoors Day?

Cape Charles

Day at the Beach at Cape Charles/9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

Come out and enjoy the morning at the Kiptopeke State Park beach. We will have a touch table featuring the creatures that call the Chesapeake Bay home. We will also explore and see what else we can discover living on the beach. Make sure to bring your swimsuit and your sand shovel.

Fish for Fossils at the Chippokes Plantation State Park

Chippokes will offer the following programs to connect visitors to the wonders of the outdoors:
9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Let’s Go Fishing!-Children’s Fishing Tourney ($2/person $6/family)
Even fish like the outdoors! Register and Pay at the Visitor Center. Meet at the footbridge on College Run Trail.
3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Fossil Walk
Get a sense of the outdoors, 4 million years ago! Meet at the River House parking lot.
6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Canoeing on Lower Chippokes Creek ($11/person)
A relaxing outdoor excursion on the water! Register and pay at the Visitor Center. Meet at the Jones-Stewart Mansion parking lot.

Virginia Beach

Kite-a-palooza at False Cape State Park/9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. $10

Meet at Little Island City Park for transport into False Cape State Park and celebrate by enjoying some fresh air and kite flying along False Cape’s beautiful shoreline.  Learn the science between kites and air, professional tips and tricks to kite flying, and discover what kites and bald eagles have in common! When we are done with an exciting kite flying experience you will have the opportunity to join The Friends of False Cape who will be hosting a fundraiser, with hot dogs, watermelon, lemonade and all the trimmings. We will make a short stop at the Visitor Center where the fundraiser will be held as we depart for the day.

Get outdoors at First Landing State Park/10:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m.

GET OUTDOORS EVERYONE!!!! And what better place to go than to First Landing State Park. Complete a scavenger hunt or attend any of the day’s interpretive programs and you will earn a small giveaway and a raffle ticket for a chance to win a park prize pack. The prize pack winner will be drawn from all raffle entries at the end of the day.
Programs include:
10 a.m. Swamp Stomp at the Trail Center
8:30 p.m. Night Hike at the Trail Center

Williamsburg

Walk and Paddle Through York River State Park/8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.

Don’t stay inside four walls!  There are a variety of outdoor activities awaiting you.
Begin your day with a ranger guided Photography Walk.
Pick Your Paddle and explore Taskinas Creek; Meet up with the Roaming Ranger; Join the Fossil Frenzy Hike for prehistoric relics; And round out your day with us with our ranger guided Night Hike and Stargazing.
Our trails are always open for self adventurers as well.
Please call for more information and reservations.  Rental fees apply for paddling programs.  Hikes are free with parking.
