Virginia Teacher of the Year Finalist in Chesapeake

We’re singing the praises of Dr. Toney McNair, Jr.

The Chesapeake educator is in the running for Virginia Teacher of the Year!

McNair has been teaching for 17 years, 10 of them as the choral teacher at Indian River Middle School.

Last year he was the Chesapeake Teacher of the Year. Today, he learned he was one of eight teachers selected as the 2017 Virginia Regional Teachers of the year.

McNair said he felt overwhelmed when he heard the news. “This morning when I saw Dr. Roberts come in I thought ‘oh no, I did something’. (laughs) Instead of going to the principal’s office the principal is coming to me.”

He was so overwhelmed that when the announcement was made over the loudspeaker, it brought him to tears. “This is the first time that I’ve actually cried and I don’t mind because real men can cry, like real men can wear pink haha,” joked McNair.

All kidding aside, he said he’s truly honored. He said it’s a win for the school and the kids because as he moves up, so do they — and it’s important to honor the craft of teaching because everyone, from the governor to the president, was once taught by a teacher.
