Hotel Tax Grants Awarded to Air & Space Center, Boo Williams Sportsplex

$419,304 from a hotel tax will go to fund two important Hampton institutions: the Virginia Air & Space Center and the Boo Williams Sportsplex.

The Boo Williams Sportsplex, which attracts high school athletes to weekend tournaments throughout the year, will receive $219,304. The Virginia Air & Space Center, which is also the visitor’s center for both NASA Langley and Langley Air Force Base, will receive $200,000.

The Community Cultural, Athletic and Visitor Attraction Grant Program was established by the Hampton City Council as part of the budget approved in May 2013. The grants were authorized by the Economic Development Authority, and the hotel tax is designed to “provide financial assistance to cultural and athletic organizations to be used to improve standards of operation, promote organizational sustainability and/or increase community awareness and public attendance at athletic or cultural organizations within the City.”
