Taking the HRT might be a little easier around the area here soon. The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the company a $1.25 million grant that will be combined with matching fund from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The grant will allow HRT to purchase nine new, fully loaded buses.
The company was the only one in Virginia to receive money from the Buses and Bus Facilities Grants Program.
The program makes federal resources available to replace, rehabilitate and purchase buses.
The office of Third District Congressman Bobby Scott worked with HRT staff to help secure the grant:
“HRT is already taking concrete steps to offer safer, more efficient, and more sustainable services,” Scott said. “The awarding of this grant to replace a number of buses well past their useful lives will allow HRT to continue to work towards achieving these goals.”
The nine news buses are expected to cost about $4 million.
