Love & Basketball was a movie that came out in 2000 about two people who grow up and fall in love with each other while playing the sport. A story line similar to the movie is playing out over at Norfolk State University. Jonathan Wade and Kiara Phillips are respective members of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, and are engaged to one another.
Kiara, a native of Australia, and Wade met when the two were playing at Gulf Coast State College in Florida. Jonathan, a Florida native, made his way to NSU after being recruited by the team to transfer. Not wanting to be separated from her love, Phillips recruited herself to the Spartans’ women’s coaching staff, and was offered a scholarship.
“The coaches, our teammates, the community thinks it’s a great thing because we bring a positive vibe that people seem to enjoy around the campus,” Wade said.
While date night doesn’t seem uncommon for college kids, sometimes pizza and movie according to Kiara, the couple’s story is one that you don’t see much in college athletics. They both will be entering into their senior years next season for the Spartans and have big plans for life after college; including marriage and more basketball. I’m guessing it will be quite the competitive household for the two.
Check out their story in the video below, and get out to Echols Hall next season to check them out in action.
