Attention Hampton Roads wrestling fans!
Tidewater Comicon is this weekend, and what could be a better way to get excited than to talk to one of the stars coming to visit our corner of Virginia?
You might remember Jake “The Snake” Roberts entering the professional wrestling ring with a snake, taking on opponents and sending them home with his DDT finishing move.
He told me all about his upcoming visit and his incredible story about addiction and recovery, and he’s looking forward to talking to fans this weekend. Meet him yourself at Tidewater Comicon and chat with him all about his life as a wrestler, some of the fun he got into, and hear an incredibly inspirational message about how he turned his life around! It’s this weekend, Saturday and Sunday May 21-22 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Get your tickets at TidewaterComicon.com.
Sarah Hill, hrScene.com Senior Producer: Have you been to Hampton Roads before?
Jake “The Snake” Roberts: Oh yea I’ve been many times. It’s going to be a blast. We’re going to have a great time. I’m going for the long haul! I do appreciate the fans so very much. They raised almost $20k for (my recent shoulder) surgery. I can’t believe they helped me out, but they care!
I’ve been there lots of times over the years, performing at the (Hampton) Coliseum and Norfolk of course. I probably wouldn’t recognize it with all the growth they’ve had, though! I’ll be signing autographs, taking pictures… let’s do it man. Let’s have a good time.
Q: Do we have the best wrestling fans, or what?
Fans in this area are great. They were always great fans. I enjoyed them immensely. They’re so loyal- but wresting fans are the best on the planet. They’re with you through thick and thin.
Q: What are you looking forward to doing here in Virginia Beach?
Give me some restaurant recommendations! I’ll make a fan pay for dinner. Just kidding!
Q: Tell me a little about yourself! What have you been up to lately?
A: Well I wrestled for 40 years, I was pretty busy with that! The last 4 and a half, almost 5 years I’ve been getting sober and clean and getting my life in order for the first time in my life.
Q: What turned your life around?
A: Diamond Dallas Page called me on the phone and 45 minutes later he had me on the (DDP) Yoga Program. Dallas was one of those guys who once he got started he would not give up. We turned it into a movie called the “Resurrection of Jake the Snake” and you can find it online.
I went from being in such bad shape to starting to get clean and about a year into it I tore up my shoulder again. I didn’t have insurance or anything going for me… I was living with Dallas, that was the deal. He paid my bills and a nice place to stay and in return the only thing I had to do was stay clean and sober. I struggled like hell to go cold turkey. I should have died but I didn’t.
Q: What do you want your fans to know?
A: If there’s someone out there struggling with drugs or alcohol, talk to me. I want to give back. I want to help someone else. I had that opportunity and the best high is when you help someone struggling with their life. I’ll help you get started on your journey. I’ll do everything I can to help.
