Memorial Day is the holiday where we take time to remember those who lost their lives in the service of our country. With the huge military community in Hampton Roads there are dedication ceremonies and events all over the region, all weekend long.

Special tribute to Tony Stein, the Honorable Faye Mitchell and Barbara E. Johnson Alexander. As well as a salute to those who volunteered to fight in the American Civil War to save the United States of America.
Saturday | 10 a.m. | Memorial Weekend Commemoration Ceremony | Willow Oaks Pool
Memorial Day commemoration featuring a color guard, reception, and food. Local youth will participate in this ceremony honoring our military.
Monday | 2:00 p.m. | Norfolk’s Memorial Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony | Nauticus Theater
Guest speaker for the ceremony is Vice Admiral Bruce H. Lindsey, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command. Norfolk’s Memorial Day Ceremony also features performances by the U.S. Fleet Forces Band and POW/MIA table by Norfolk Combined Veterans Organizations. The event is co-sponsored by the Mayor’s Commission on Veterans Affairs.

Annually, the Memorial Day Parade salutes the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and celebrates Portsmouth’s proud military heritage. This year’s parade will include floats, marching band units, armed forces units, lots of excitement and much more.

During the ceremony, they will be placing memorial wreaths throughout the cemetery, which is located at 5310 Milners Road. Gerald Rhoads will be the keynote speaker for the event. Rhoads was the past commander of the Department of Virginia’s American Legion. Gerald Soucheray will give the welcome, and music will be played by Sarah Smith and Allen Hall Jr. from Bugles Across America.
