Newport News Student Robotics Team to Compete in Australia

A Newport News student robotics team is taking their talent down under.

The “L.E.D. Empire” (Legendary Engineering Dudes), Team 6027 is an award-winning Virginia FIRST Tech robotics team made up of four middle school students and coached by Ms. Dusty Crocco. They are headed to Sydney, Australia to compete in the Asia Pacific International Robotics Competition.

The team has been performing fundraising events to make the trip possible. They have put on yard sales, collected scrap metal, sold T-shirts and sought funds by going door to door.

While they continue their fundraising efforts, they also have a GoFundMe account for those who are able to support the trip.

Thirty-three teams will compete in the tournament, representing China, India, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, Korea, New Zealand, Mexico and the U.S.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a not-for-profit organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, engineering, technology, and math. Learn more about the organization at
