Do you know an individual or a business in Norfolk who takes extra special care of the environment? The Norfolk Environmental Commission is looking for nominees for their 2015 Norfolk Environmental Action Awards. Nominations are being accepted through July 15. Self-nominations are encouraged!
- Business Award
This award recognizes a business, large or small, that has improved its business through one of more of the following ways: applies “reduce, reuse, and recycle” practices in waste management and prevention, educates employees about sustainability best practices; provides employees with resources and incentives; supports local non-profit or government environmental projects or programs; and creates an attractive storefront and landscape design using native vegetation and xeriscape (minimal water use) techniques.
- City Employee Award
This award is given to a City of Norfolk employee who exhibits efforts towards environmental stewardship and/or resilience above and beyond duties designated by job description. This individual is an environmental leader in the workplace and shares a positive view of environmental stewardship with others.
- Environmental Resilience Award
This award recognizes individuals, groups or businesses whose actions improve environmental resilience in the City of Norfolk through actions such as litter prevention, wetland restoration, etc.
- Ernie Morgan Lifetime Service Award
This award is presented to an individual or organization whose body of work has made an extraordinary, long-term contribution towards the promotion of environmental sustainability/resilience in the City of Norfolk. The recipient’s actions will exemplify the Norfolk Environmental Commission’s (NEC) mission: to lead citizens toward environmental stewardship.
- Excellence in Education and Outreach Award
This award recognizes an adult age 18 or over who has individually led or carried out a consistent and steadfast effort to improve the natural environment in his or her neighborhood, public space or business district through one or more of the activities listed below.
- Green Building Award
A Green Building Pioneer is an individual, organization or business that expands the use of sustainable and/or resilient building in Norfolk. Nominees must demonstrate actions and building techniques that have resulted in the building or renovation of public or private buildings in a more sustainable or resilient way.
- Youth Award
This award recognizes individuals or groups ages 8-17 who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability through activities or programs that have a measurable positive impact on the environment.
The Norfolk Environmental Commission (NEC) is a City Council-appointed group of Norfolk volunteer citizens, whose mission is to lead Norfolk residents toward environmental stewardship. The NEC empowers the citizens of Norfolk with a sense of pride and individual environmental stewardship involving land, air, and water quality issues.
