The Virginia Zoo has named their baby mountain zebra, or foal, Emilie.
Out of the top five names, Emilie received the most votes. Runners up were Aida, Amelia and Ellie.
Emilie was born April 13 to zebra parents Zack and Abbey.
More than 2,500 names were submitted for Emilie and the zoo’s staff voted on the finalist names. The winner was selected at random and earned a $200 shopping spree at the zoo’s gift shop.
“I’d like to thank the community for submitting names and participating in this contest,” said Greg Bockheim, the zoo’s executive director. “It has been really fun to see all of the creative name suggestions for our baby. I’m happy to know that the zoo and our baby zebra have so many fans.”
Abbey, Zack, and Emilie can be visited in the Zoo’s Africa – Okavango Delta exhibit. Those interested in planning a trip to see the zebra family can first visit www.virginiazoo.org or call 757-441-2374 for more information.
