Portsmouth’s LaShawn Merritt wins bronze at the Rio Olympics

Portsmouth’s LaShawn Merritt won the bronze medal in the men’s 400-meter final.

Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa has won the Olympic 400-meter title in a world record 43.03 seconds. Van Niekerk, running in the outside lane, stormed out of the blocks and held off of 2012 champion Kirani James and Merritt.

Merritt was the Olympic 400m champion in 2008 at the Beijing games. He will also run in the 200m and the 4x400m relay.
