Races in So Many Places in “On The Run!”

The Latest Running News, Notes, “Shout Outs” and more from Running Reporter, Jon “Flex” Leiding

All of Hampton Roads felt the effects of Hurricane Matthew this past weekend. While parts of Virginia and North Carolina are still recovering, runners felt like a weekend of competition was “blown away”.

Having been out in that mess all day Saturday night and Sunday, safety for all of us was more important. I hope you and your friends and family are okay.

There was one race this past Saturday morning up in Williamsburg; the World Class Freedom Run 8K and 5K. In the 8K, which is just shy of a five miler, Roger Hopper, from Williamsburg, was the winner in a course record of 28:04. Chesapeake’s Jackie Hoffman was the women’s winner with a solid 34:53.

Gotta give some love to our race walking friends! Portsmouth’s Scott Stakes crushed his division in 52:49 and the ladies champ was eleven-year-old Jocelyn Lamprecht with another great performance of 1:04:02. Wow!

In the 5k, 15-year-old Conor Sokolowsky from Williamsburg took the title with a strong 19:57. While Yorktown nine-year-old, Brynn Torry, lowered the course record in the event with super 25:35.

All other races from this past weekend were rescheduled.

Everyone likes the video reports and people keep getting me pics from the races so, let’s take off as we go…”On The Run!”

Good luck to all of you getting some miles this weekend. Keep on rockin’ whatever you are training for, I see you!

Thanks to all who share the blog and my friends who keep sending in pictures and videos of the local races.  I can’t be everywhere, but you make it easier to share with all of us in the 757. Maybe I’ll be giving you a “Shout Out” soon!
