World’s Oldest Ham Brings Home the Bacon in Smithfield

Smithfield is home to a lot of great things. But did you know that it is home to the World’s Oldest Ham?

Over at the Isle of Wight County Museum sits “Hammy.” The ham that was cured in 1902 and after being left behind in a packing house, it was considered a pet to P.D. Gwaltney Jr.,  founder of Gwaltney Foods.

The ham was then taken around the world to food trade shows to show-off the world famous Smithfield Hams.

The ham, which turns 115-years-old this year, has been featured in travel books, books about the strange, and has been featured on Ripley’s Believe it or Not.

The ham even has a 24-hour webcam where you can check in on how he is doing, it is know as the Ham Cam.

The Isle of Wight County Museum is filled with tons of fun history, including the World’s Oldest Peanut, and always has something interesting going on.
