Your Hampton Roads Weekend May 22-24

There may be a weekend where you have nothing to do, but this is not that weekend, my friends!

For many it’s a long weekend and that means travel or time with the friends and family, but it also means the start of the summer season!

Here are some ways to have a fun weekend. Don’t forget to pay homage to our fallen heroes on Monday at one of Hampton Roads’ wreath-laying ceremonies.

Friday, May 22-Sunday May 24/Bam Bam’s Spring Jam
Kam Cares Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization established by Kam Chancellor of the Seattle Seahawks.  Kam Cares seeks to equip children from underserved communities in Hampton Roads and Seattle areas with educational, health, and wellness tools and resources to position students for greater academic success.

Thursday, May 21-Monday May 25/Arm Cuauhtemoc Mexican Tall Ship/Town Point Park
On Thursday, May 21, 2015 the Mexican Navy sail training tall ship the “ARM CUAUHTEMOC” is scheduled to arrive in Downtown Norfolk, docking at Otter Berth next to Waterside.  The ARM CUAUHTEMOC’s last visit to Norfolk was in the Spring of 2013 and was also part of the OpSail2012 Virginia fleet.  The ship will depart on Monday, May 25, 2015. FREE

Friday, May 22-Sunday May 24/Umoja Festival/NTelos Wireless Pavilion
Umoja means unity and this three-day festival presents the rich heritage of African cultural and the manner in which it weaves into our national tapestry. Visitors are introduced to the continent through art, music and entertainment, demonstrations and food. From the Opening Ceremonies and The Permission of the Elders Ceremony, to the closing Umoja stage performance, this celebration is a family event that will appeal to all ages. FREE

Saturday, May 23-Sunday, May 24/Pungo Strawberry Festival/1776 Princess Anne Rd.
Not only does the Festival have all the strawberries you can eat offered in over 50 different ways, activities include a pie eating contest, strawberry bake-off,continuous entertainment on three stages, a parade, one of the largest carnivals on the east coast, a multi-million dollar military display, pig races, youth art show, and arts and craft booths. Friday, May 22-Sunday, June 28/Food and Wine Festival at Busch Gardens/Busch Gardens
It’s the first weekend for the culinary delights at Busch Gardens® Food & Wine Festival. Enjoy authentic tastes from around the world while strolling through the world’s most beautiful theme park. Busch Gardens invites guests to unleash their inner foodie with a variety of dishes and wines not normally served at the park. Fee is admission to park



8:30 p.m./Movie Under the Stars: Monsters University/Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks and enjoy some of the biggest movies on our outdoor BIG SCREEN! Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Movies subject to change. Movies begin at 8:30 p.m. FREE



6 p.m./Downtown Hampton Block Party/Downtown Hampton
For the past 21 years, thousands of residents from all over Hampton Roads have gathered together in downtown Hampton for music, food, and community during the annual downtown Hampton block party series.  This year’s block party is set to be bigger and better than ever before! FREE


2 p.m./Go Local 757 Craft Beer Fest /Ghent
The 2nd annual event will begin at Smartmouth Brewing, continue through the great restaurants Chelsea & Ghent and finish with a finale party featuring The Janks at O’Connor Brewing Co. from 6-9 pm. $25 through 5/22, $30 at the door

10 a.m./Sandbridge Art Show/661 Sandbridge Rd
Come on out to the Sandbridge Art show to benefit the Sandbridge Chapel Day School! There will be mini-painting classes or you can paint a wine glass. The art show will highlight young artists and featured local artists.



11 p.m./Memorial Day Moonlight Cruise/Spirit of Norfolk
Moonlight cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk for guests 21 and up.
Tickets start at $26.27


8 p.m./Old Crow Medicine Show/nTelos Wireless Pavilion
On September 17th, 2013 Old Crow Medicine Show received the great honor of being inducted as the newest members of the historic Grand Ole Opry. Other highlights from the year included winning the Grammy Award for “Best Long Form Music Video” for the film Big Easy Express, and having their classic single, “Wagon Wheel”, receive the RIAA’s Platinum certification for selling over 1,000,000 copies. Tickets start at $39.75
