“Good old-fashioned country style music with a little kick.”

7 p.m. | A Musical Journey with the Sweet Plantain Quartet | Hampton University’s Ogden Hall
With members hailing from the South Bronx, New Jersey and Venezuela, Sweet Plaintain is “artfully fusing the western classical traditions in which they were trained with the hip hop, jazz improv, and Latin rhythms on which they were raised.”

Norfolk

9 a.m. | Buckshot at Waterside District | Waterside District
The country band from Virginia Beach heads to Norfolk for two nights. They’ll play at the Scope at the Admirals game on Saturday night.

7 p.m. | Norfolk Virginia Acoustic Show | Starving Artist Cafe
An evening of acoustic music from ANDREJACK and special guest Keith Sloane

7 p.m. | Norfolk Admirals vs. South Carolina Stingrays | Norfolk Scope
The Admirals squeeze in two games this weekend at Scope after more than two weeks on the road. Their next game at home won’t be until Feb. 2.

Portsmouth 

9 p.m. | Blackwater Jam | The Barrel II
This local trio jams out at the The Barrell II on Churchland Blvd. on Friday night!

Saturday

Kill Devil Hills

10 p.m. | Family Tree | Outer Banks Brewing Station
This progressive band from Norfolk, inspired by artists from Bob Marley to Miles Davis, will jam out in Kill Devil Hills Saturday night.

Hampton 

9 a.m. – 7 p.m.  | Discover the Dinosaurs  | Hampton Roads Convention Center

9:30 p.m. | Jan & Zane Trio | Brown Chicken Brown Cow
“Years of big band experience paired down to acoustic sensibilities, Jan and Zane perform an energetic set of the songs you love from decades of hits.”

Newport News

9 a.m. | iPhone Photography Workshop | The Mariners’ Museum and Park
Learn how to take shots like a pro at this class taught by photography instructor Steven J. Canale. The event is $25 for members, $40 for guests.

8 p.m.  |  Saturday Night Game Night  | Tradition Brewing Company
Tradition is starting a new tradition! In addition to their usual Wednesday night trivia, they’ll be bringing the games on the weekends. This week’s game is Bingo. There’ll be 8 games throughout the night and The Scottish Pig food truck is dishing out grub. It’s free to play and there’ll be prizes handed out!

Norfolk

This funky cover band plays all of your favorite ’80s hits.

Portsmouth 

4 p.m. | Praise and Paint | The Great Awakening, Church of Christ
Meet new people while painting and praising in a room filled with music. Food will be available for purchase.

Smithfield 

2 p.m. | Learn about the Battle of Mackie’s Mill | Isle of Wight County Museum
Commemorate the 237th anniversary of Battle of Mackie’s Mill, when local militia fought Benedict Arnold’s forces.

Suffolk

8 p.m. | The Malpass Brothers | Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts
The duo plays old-style country music, rockabilly, bluegrass, and a bit of gospel and blues.

Virginia Beach

8 p.m. | Jazz with The Original Rhondels | Lubo
This classic Virginia Beach act can play it all, but they’ll slow it down with some smooth jazz come Saturday.

9 p.m.  | Asphalt Jungle  | 615 Bar & Grill
This Virginia Beach rock band plays everything from ’80s hits to modern country.

Williamsburg 

10 a.m. | Pruning – Winter Tree Care Class | Williamsburg Botanical Garden
Learn about how to take care of your trees and shrubs in winter weather. The free event is open to the public, but a $5 donation to the garden is appreciated. For more info click here.
