The Road To Dover: 2017 Firefly Music Festival Preview

For the past five years, droves of music fans in Hampton Roads head up the Eastern Shore to attend the Firefly Music Festival.  In the past years headliners included The Killers, The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sir Paul McCartney.  The headliners this year are The Weeknd, Chance The Rapper, Muse, Bob Dylan and Twenty One Pilots.  New for 2017 at Firefly is that they have billed themselves as the first “Fan-Curated” music festival, which means that the public had a say in every aspect of the festival.  From the bands performing, to what food will be served and what the merchandise will look like – the fans had a say.

Each year I like to focus on the up and coming artist at the bottom of the lineup or, as I like to call them, the acts in the smaller font.  I always look back when I head home and always remember these artists as the festival’s best.

In years past Haim, X Ambassadors and one of the headliners this year, Twenty One Pilots were featured in the smaller font.  Here are my top 5 to see at this year’s festival.

Hamish Anderson

A rockin’ blues singer from Australia, Hamish was named one of the top 10 new artists of 2016 by Yahoo.  His new album, Trouble, has been hailed as one of the best of 2016 by Songpicker.

Cold Roses

A great indie-rock band from Philadelphia, Cold Roses mixes vintage rock with a modern twist on the Philly Soul sound.  You’ll get a sneak peek of their upcoming album, Escape To Anywhere.

Lawrence

Sunday – 2:15p – 2:45p The Treehouse

Led by siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence, this 8-piece soul pop band has been the talk of the music industry for their smashing live performances.

Souvenirs

This four-piece rock band from Carpinteria, CA has been on the road with AFI supporting their fantastic new album, Posture Of Apology

Fletcher

Thursday – 2:30p – 3:30p

Entertainment Weekly named her one of the top ten artists who will rule 2017 and her single, Wasted Youth, already had over 1 million views.  She will definitely be one people will be talking about on their way home.
