hrScene Artist Profile: Kishi Bashi

I’m happy to debut this brand new weekly feature to hrScene, where I will profile a local musician or band who you can see perform down the street or a local artist who has hit the big stage.  This will be an evolving feature – where each week will be a little bit different than the previous.  I might go out and have a beer with an artist or go to a Norfolk Tides business man special and get a guitarist’s take on the infield fly-rule.  Today, I’m going to keep it simple and do an article on one of my favorites artists, who grew up in Norfolk and is now taking the world by storm – The very talented Kishi Bashi.

The son of two ODU professors, Kishi graduated from Maury High and headed up to the prestigious Berkee College Of Music in Boston and became a world-class violinist.  He toured the world with Regina Spektor and Of Montreal and came back to Norfolk to record his debut LP, 151a.  The album received critical praise and the first single, ‘Manchester’, which was used in an American Express campaign that first aired during the 2012 Academy Awards.  Another song off that record, ‘Bright Whites’, was the title song used in Microsoft’s launch of their Windows 8 operating system.

Kishi has performed all over the world and has played at numerous festivals including SXSW and FireFly.  On January 13, 2012, he made his television debut on The Hampton Roads Show and he recruited The Last Bison to tour with him after seeing their performance on Live Music Friday.

Last year he released his second LP, Lighght (light), which reached  #52 on the Billboard 200.  He is currently on the road with Guster and tonight (Feb. 16) he will be the musical guest on The Late Show with David Letterman.

You can see Kishi perform locally at the LAVA Music Festival in Suffolk Saturday May 16.  Click here for more info on Kishi Bashi and if you’re a coffee lover like me, he has teamed up with Jittery Joe’s Coffee in Athens for his signature ‘Kishi Bashi Royal Daark Blend’.  Click on this link to buy some beans.
