Virginia Sales Tax Holiday / Tax-Free Weekend

The Virginia Sales Tax Holiday runs August 7 – 9 this year. The sales tax holiday period is when sales taxes are not collected on certain purchases. During the sales tax holiday period shoppers may make tax-free purchases of school supplies with a selling price of $20 or less per item and articles of clothing with a selling price of $100 or less per article.

The Virginia Sales Tax Holiday is beneficial beyond back to school. The Tax Free Weekend also qualifies Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Items, since hurricane season (June 1 – Nov. 30) overlaps the time that students return to school.

Additionally, Energy Star and WaterSense items also qualify for a tax break during the holiday. Qualifying items carrying either the Energy Star or WaterSense label with a sales price of $2,500 or less purchased for non-commercial home or personal use are tax-exempt eligible.
