On The Run! The latest Running News and Notes from the “757” from Jon “Flex” Leiding.
Congrats to those of you who ran this past weekend or participated in races. We want to make sure that you get a little love. First, the Mulberry Island 5K and Half Marathon were speedy, especially for 60-year-old Stephen Chantry who won the 5K in 18:36. The Half marathon was won by Bryce Livingstion in a swift 1:13: 28 while the Ladies Champion was good friend of the blog, Octavia Rinehardt, winning in 1:27:18.
If you ran this past weekend a big “Shout out” to you! WHOOT!
Because I always try to give you news from around the world here’s one for you: Hidecki Myazacki from Japan set an age group record this week for the hundred meter dash at age 105!!! The man, nicknamed “Golden Bolt,” blazed the hundred meters in just under 45 seconds at 42.22 seconds. Why is this so big? Because there was no age group record of anyone running 100m at age 105!!! Good for him! He says his idol is Usain Bolt, current record holder of the 100 m. and would like race him. You Go, Boy!
Normally this is the point where I say there’s so many big races going on this weekend but this is all I’ve heard since Monday: “The big storm is coming! The big storm is coming! The big storm is coming!” That’s all we’ve heard all week.
The Larchmont RAT Race One Mile and 5K scheduled for tonight in Norfolk is still a GO! Norfolk officials will make a Noon time call if there’s any reason to cancel it according to Race Director Jessica Chesson. Good luck!
Saturday, things get crazy! The Neptune Festival at the oceanfront has been canceled. The Neptune Festival Children’s 1 mile has been canceled but currently the 5K and 8K are still on.
The Heart of Ghent 10K had been rerouted due to rising water in Ghent, now our good friends from Mettle Events have rescheduled for October 10th. Here’s a twist: if you already registered and cannot race that day, the Heart of Ghent 10K now has a Virtual option! You can run a 10k the week before the new race date (10/5-9) and by sending your distance/time/name you’ll be able to pick up your packet (shirt and medal) at packet pick-up on 10/9 at Running Etc. in Norfolk from 3pm-7pm or you can send an email to Mettle Events and they’ll make arrangements for you to pick it up from a location in Norfolk on Monday. Ann Hupp- your Mettle Events group rocks! The Hilton 5K has been postponed due to construction along the course. “What in the Wide World of Sports is going on?” Dogs and cats, Cowboys and Redskins fans living together. Oh my!
Weather really does play a part in our everyday lives. If you are going out for a run this weekend, here’s the forecast- you’re going to get wet somewhere in Hampton Roads. Make sure you dress accordingly. Wind will also be a factor.
Stay tuned to our friends at the WAVY Weather Center for updates. Don Slater and Jeremy Wheeler will do their very best to give you the latest 411.
That’s all the time we have this week for On the Run. STAY SAFE! Hopefully you’ll get some “run-time” in this weekend. Maybe I’ll catch you…”On The Run!”
