September is “Hunger Action” month and we want to highlight U.S. Coast Guard Yeoman 2nd class Cassey B. Lawrence for her service to the community and local foodbanks. Coastie Lawrence was awarded the American Legion’s 2015 Spirit of Service Award during the organization’s 97th National Convention in Baltimore. Lawrence is a Murfeesboro, Tennesee native. She joined the Coast Guard in 2010 and is currently stationed at the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City, N.C. Lawrence is the President of the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Enlisted Association and is the volunteer coordinator for the Base Elizabeth City
Complex, which coordinates volunteer efforts for seven commands. In 2014, Lawrence volunteered more than 550 hours. She conducted an Angel Tree event and Thanksgiving basket giveaway for junior enlisted guardsmen, volunteered at local food banks, and organized a Martin Luther King service day event and much more. American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm and Medal of Honor recipient Ryan Pitts presented Lawrence the Spirit of Service Award. She was honored alongside representatives from the other four armed services at the annual business gathering of the 2.4 million-member Legion, the nation’s largest veterans organization. Lawrence was also given a membership in The American Legion as part of the award.
Thank you for all you do for your community, Yeoman Lawrence!
