USS Jason Dunham sets off on 6-month deployment

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Family and friends of the crew aboard USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) gathered on a cold, snowy winter morning in Norfolk to see them off.

The Sailors on the guided-missile destroyer will spend six months deployed to the U.S. 4th and 6th Fleet area of responsibility. They left from Naval Station Norfolk the morning of Jan. 27.

According to the U.S. Navy, the destroyer is named for Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for service in Ira. The ship is capable of conducting sea to land, sea to sea, sea to air and anti-submarine combat missions while also offering capabilities for maritime interdiction operations and humanitarian assistance.
