Every year in June and July, the Virginia Living Museum sets out live-capture, baited hoop nets in Deer Park Lake. Come to the Children’s Garden to watch as VLM staff gather all of the turtles that are collected in these nets, identify the species of turtles and whether they are male or female, clean the shell to remove any stuck-on algae and determine whether this is a new turtle or recapture.

Meet therapy dogs and pets up for adoption, or enter the pet photo contest by tagging the library on social media and using the hashtag #DogDaysofSPL from July 1 to July 21 for a chance to win a cool prize. Therapy dogs and animals for adoption will be on site. Personal pets will not be allowed inside the library building.
