The Norfolk City Jail library was short by about 1,000 books and lacked inspirational books to help inmates lead better lives. That is, until the local community heeded the call and started to donate.
Norfolk Sheriff’s Office Communications Manager Karen Hopkins says, “We had many people tell us that they saw the story in the media, and they felt inspired to help.”
“We have received more than 2,600 books, when we asked for one thousand,” Library director Dan Provance said.
Right now, Provance is working to organize all the books, and he believes having fresh material will make a difference.
“Inmates can keep their minds occupied, and their imagination can take them anywhere,” Provance said.
Thank you, Hampton Roads!
