The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command is bringing the Spirit of Christmas during the dog days of summer.
Friday, July 17 the iconic red kettles and ringing bells will be at Harris Teeter stores in Wards Corner (7750 Granby Street, Norfolk 23505) and Princess Anne Plaza (3333 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Virginia Beach).
The Christmas in July campaign aims to raise funds to support the programs and services of The Salvation Army throughout the year.
While many view The Salvation Army to be more prevalent during the Christmas holiday season, the organization helps hundreds in the community each month with services like rent and utility assistance, food packages, transitional housing for women and shelter services.
In 2014, 41,558 men, women and children throughout Hampton Roads received assistance from the organization. There was a 37 percent increase in food pantry requests and a 15 percent increase in shelter needs for the homeless. The Christmas in July campaign will help The Salvation Army be able to continue these needs to be met.
Additionally, The Salvation Army and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center will celebrate Christmas in July with a week’s worth of events that will culminate with the second annual Big Trike Giveaway on Saturday, July 18, sponsored by Liberty Tax.
