If you’re planning to take advantage of the long weekend and the lower gas prices and hit the road to see family and friends this Thanksgiving, you’ll have plenty of company!
AAA Travel forecasts 46.9 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the holiday travel period from Wednesday, November 25 to Sunday, November 29. In Virginia, almost 1,322,558 folks will take to the roads, rails, and skies. Virginia’s number is a bit down from last year, but nationwide these travel numbers are the largest since 2007.
If we’re talking just people on Virginia’s highways, there will be a predicted 1,197,002 traveling by automobile.
The reason for the overall increase is likely due to lower gas prices.
“This Thanksgiving, more Americans will carve out time to visit friends and family since 2007,” said Georjeane Blumling, Vice President of Public Affairs for AAA Tidewater Virginia. Blumling goes on to say, “One holiday gift has come early this year. Americans will likely pay the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices since 2008. Lower prices are helping boost disposable income, and enabling families to kick off the holiday season with a Thanksgiving getaway.”
