4th of July Holiday City Closings


The 2017 4th of July holiday is bringing a long weekend with it on a Tuesday. So here’s some info you need to know about closures, roads, and trash collection around your city.

Chesapeake

All city offices, courts, libraries, and community centers will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, July 3 and 4. The Chesapeake Visitor’s Center will be open normal hours throughout the holiday period.

Trash and recycling collections will be moved back one day during the holiday week, as follows:

  • Tuesday, July 4 collections made on Wednesday, July 5
  • Wednesday, July 5 collections made on Thursday, July 6
  • Thursday, July 6 collections made on Friday, July 7
  • Friday, July 7 collections made on Saturday, July 8

Normal operating hours for all facilities will resume on Wednesday, July 5.

Hampton

City Offices: Closed Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

Garbage collection: Normal trash collection will take place Monday, July 3. No regular recycling, refuse, bulk trash or yard waste collection Tuesday, July 4. Tuesday collections will be made Wednesday, July 5.

Landfill: Open 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on July 4. Yard waste site Closed Tuesday, July 4.

Street sweeping: No sweeping July 4. Friday, July 7, is makeup day.

Libraries: Closed Monday, July 3, and Tuesday, July 4

Courts: Closed July 4

Health Dept./clinics: Closed Monday, July 3, and Tuesday, July 4

Social Services: Closed July 4

Hampton History Museum: Museum open July 4; staff offices closed

Newport News

Most Newport News City offices will be closed on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. This includes City Hall, City offices at City Center at Oyster Point, Newport News Waterworks’ customer services offices, the Public Works Operations Center, and both locations of the Treasurer’s Office and Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office (City Hall and Denbigh).

In addition, all Newport News public libraries will be closed on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

Newport News Recovery Operations Center (formerly the Residential Waste Drop-Off & Composting Facility, i.e., landfill) will be closed on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

All garbage, recycling, and bulk waste collection -The Solid Waste Division plans to collect as usual on Monday, July 3. No collection will occur on Tuesday, July 4. Tuesday’s collection will be conducted on Wednesday, July 5. Wednesday’s collection will be delayed one day to Thursday, July 6 and Thursday’s collection will be collected on Friday, July 7.

Norfolk

The City of Norfolk’s government offices will close on Monday, July 3 through Tuesday, July 4, 2017 in observance of Independence Day.

Garbage and recycling collection for Tuesday, July 4 customers will be picked up on Monday, July 3.

All City of Norfolk government offices, including city hall, state offices (including Commissioner of the Revenue and the City Treasurer), and the Circuit, General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts will all be closed on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

Libraries, including Slover Library, will also be closed on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

Portsmouth

City offices: Closed Monday, July 3 & Tuesday, July 4

The Portsmouth Circuit Court Clerk’s Office will be closed on Monday, July 3 & Tuesday, July 4, 2017 in observance of Independence Day.

Libraries and community centers: Closed Monday, July 3 & Tuesday, July 4

Trash pick up: No trash pickup on Tuesday, July 4, collection day will be Wednesday, July 5

Suffolk

Suffolk City offices will be closed Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4. Normal operations will resume Wednesday, July 5, at 8:30 a.m.

Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash on a one day delay with Tuesday’s trash routes collected on Wednesday, Wednesday’s trash routes on Thursday, Thursday’s trash routes on Friday, and Friday’s trash routes on Saturday. TFC Recycling will also run on a one day delay for the week.

The Southeastern Public Safety Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk and Regional Landfill will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, 2017.

Suffolk Transit will run as scheduled on Monday, July 3 but will not operate on Tuesday, July 4.

All Suffolk Parks & Recreation joint use recreation facilities will be closed Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

All Suffolk City Libraries (Morgan Memorial, North Suffolk, Chuckatuck) will be closed Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

Virginia Beach

The following Virginia Beach facilities will be closed Tuesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day:

  • ​All Virginia Beach government administrative offices
  • All Virginia Beach city public schools and administrative offices
  • Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney will be closed Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.
  • The Virginia Beach Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courts and Clerk’s Offices will be closed Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.
  • Virginia Beach City Landfill and Resource Recovery Center
  • Virginia Beach community recreation centers
  • Virginia Beach Public Health Department will be closed Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.
  • Virginia Beach Public Libraries
Williamsburg

City offices will be closed on Tuesday , July 4. This includes the Municipal Building, Quarterpath Recreation Center, the Williamsburg-JCC Courthouse on Monticello Street, and the Williamsburg Regional Library. Waller Mill and all City parks will be open July 4.

Garbage Collection: 

  • Monday, July 3 Garbage Collection – Pickup as normally scheduled.
  • Tuesday, July 4 Garbage Collection – Pickup delayed one day until Wednesday, July 5.
  • Wednesday, July 5 Recycling Collection – Pickup as normally scheduled.
York County

The following York County courts and offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day:

    • Courts – Closed (also closed on Monday, July 3)
    • York County Offices – Closed
    • Virginia Cooperative Extension Service – Closed (also closed on Monday, July 3)
    • York-Poquoson Social Services – Closed
    • York County Public Libraries – Closed
    • Waste Management Administrative Office – Closed
    • Waste Management Transfer Station – Closed
    • Waste Management Drop-Off Area – Closed
    • VPPSA Composting Facility – Closed

  2. I’d like to thank (sarcasticly speakin) all those who shot off (and continue to shoot off) illegal fireworks in the Red Mill Farms neighborhood. Each year you continue to disrespect those of us who have pets and/or veterans with PTSD. I walked up the street last night and saw an inconsiderate “neighbor” setting off illegal (bottle rocket type fireworks) in the middle of the street. No need to say anything to him because he/they do it every year. I’ve called the VBPD and of course nothing happens. So – to those of you who purchase and set off illegal fireworks here’s to you!
