It seems like summer just began, but with the fall semester starting on August 22, it’s time start planning for new Old Dominion University students.
Your first task as an ODU Monarch (besides getting your first ODU t-shirt) is to obtain your student ID card. This card is your first form of identification on campus, used to purchase meals, books, and supplies, and most importantly, to check-in on the day you move to campus. You can get your ID card at the University Card Center, located inside the Webb Center. They’re open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
What’s a class without a textbook? You can find out what books you’ll need for your classes through the bookstore, and even order them online to avoid the long lines.
There are mandatory orientation programs for all students that are new to ODU. Orientations are all-day events, lasting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the scheduled days. Transfer students can attend an orientation on August 17. Freshmen orientation is scheduled for August 20. Reservations for orientation can be made by logging into your student portal on the ODU website and clicking on the New Student Checklist.
If you are living on campus, it’s important to know your scheduled move-in date. If you are a resident of any university apartments, (University Village, Nusbaum Apartments, or Powhatan Village), your move-in date is August 16.
Freshmen living in campus dorms can move in on August 22, and transfer students can move in on August 23. A full schedule of move-in dates and the hourly schedule divided by name can be found on the ODU housing website. Monarch Movers will be stationed all over campus until 4 p.m. to assist students moving in. A full guide to living on campus can be found here.
To get new students acclimated to the campus, a “Week of Welcome” full of activities and meetings, begins on August 21, just after freshmen move-in. Parents, if you will be joining your Monarch on move-in day, a Parent and Family session is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the TED Constant Convocation Center. Following the family session will be a welcome speaker and spirit rally at 5 p.m., and a farewell dinner at 6 p.m. located on the Kaufman Mall.
Convocation is mandatory for all new students, and will take place on August 22, starting at 8:15 a.m. at the TED. Professional dress is suggested, as t-shirts, jeans, and shorts are not allowed.
For students who will be using the Monarch meal plans, your card will become active on August 20, and you will be able to use your card at many on campus locations.
For commuter students, don’t forget to purchase your parking permit. You can do so online, or in the Parking Services office.
Freshmen are not permitted to have a car on campus, so if you plan to bring a bicycle, you must register it with the city of Norfolk. You can do so with the ODU Campus Police at either of their office locations.
The last day to register for courses at ODU is September 1.
So, rising Monarchs, enjoy the last days of your summer vacation, and get ready to join the pride at Old Dominion.
