Nomination for Best Date in Hampton Roads: The Mariner’s Museum

Local Couple Checking it out: Meredith Ryncarz and her husband Jason

Last weekend my husband and I went on a date to the Mariners’ Museum, one of our favorite places to go in Newport News.

The experience

This was the first year that the museum has hosted the Gallery Crawl, one of many events throughout DSC_6634the year, with tickets running around $55.  We loved that the staff had handpicked special items to pull out for that evening only.  We were impressed at how knowledgeable, fun, and entertaining they made it.

There were priceless antiques, battle flags, and art on display that are usually housed in storage. We learned that only 2% of what the museum owns is ever on display.  The stories that the curators told ranged from funny, to inspiring, and tragic.  While this is an annual event, the museum does have costumed curators available on Saturdays and Sundays. There are also 3D movie tickets that can be purchased for around $6 as an additional add on to your visit but was not available for this evening event.

When we arrived on the date, we were handed a lovely wine glass and passport for the evening.  Each gallery had a different heavy hors d’oeuvres and drink related to it, which added to the experience.  On the out of the museum at the end of the evening we noticed some great events coming up in October for families and look forward to bringing our friends back with us next time we visit.

What’s in the area?

DSC_6602We love the fact that that you can make a full day out of visiting the Mariners’ Museum or simply go for a special evening event.  With a café, walking trails, and boats to rent there is something for everyone inside and around the museum itself.  With its proximity to Christopher Newport University, it is very easy to find with signs posted and parking was very close.

Normal admission is around $13 per person but as often as we have gone back to the museum and as many fun events as they offer, we actually decided to purchase a yearlong pass after attending the Gallery Crawl.
