The start of summer also means the start of hurricane season. And this week is Virginia’s Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday.
Today through Sunday, you won’t have to pay sales tax on items for your hurricane-ready kit. That includes most types of batteries (even cell phone batteries), flashlights and lanterns, bottled water of various sizes, first-aid kits, coolers, NOAA Weather Radios, portable generators, and other items.
The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts this hurricane season won’t be bad at all, but that doesn’t mean you should be caught off guard in case of severe weather.
“The prediction of a below normal hurricane season should not be taken to mean Virginia won’t be impacted this year,” said Bill Sammler, NWS warning coordination meteorologist. “Let’s all remember that it only takes one storm to cause severe damage and even loss of life. Everyone should get ready now for this hurricane season.”
All Virginia retailers participate in this tax-free holiday. For a full list of items that you can buy tax-free, click here.
