November is a great time to celebrate the aquaculture and viticulture of Virginia’s beautiful Eastern Shore by indulging in succulent, creamy and briny oysters paired with a crisp, mineral driven Steel Chardonnay from Chatham Vineyards.
Mineral-driven, salty, sweet and succulent fresh oysters can be challenging to pair with wine, but there are a few selections that can take this simple snack to a new stratosphere.
Many wines will overpower the delicate nature of raw oysters, but a great mineral-driven, crisp and steely white proves to be a worthy suitor for this precious gift from the sea.
The Nobel Prize winning author, Ernest Hemingway, had quite an affinity for these briny beauties and eloquently described the perfect oyster and wine pairing in his book Moveable Feast, “As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.”
It’s time for you to make plans to see for yourself how decadently delicious and euphoric this pairing can be.
There are many events planned throughout the Eastern Shore during the month of November. Festivities kick off on Friday November 6 with the Oyster Wine Invitational Weekend. Each weekend throughout the month, The Inn at Onancock and the Cape Charles House B&B are teaming up for Oyster and Wine Lovers’ Weekends.
Other events include Terroir & Merroir: An Oyster Extravaganza on Saturday November 14 at Chatham Vineyards in Machipongo. Chatham Vineyards is partnering with The Inn at Onancock and the Cape Charles House B&B for the Terroir, Merroir and Boudouir event that weekend.
