The 2016 Jubilee kicks off today. Tell me about the Shrimp Fest and BBQ cook-off.
The Kiwanis Club of Chesapeake has their legendary shrimp fest happening today (Thursday!) There will be shrimp and hush puppies the whole fixin’s starting at 4:30 p.m.
Friday, May 20th, the cookers start heating things up for the competitive BBQ cooking that is sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society. This will be one of the cook-offs that presenters go through to move on to the next phase of the competition in the Kansas City BBQ society.
Everyone always talks about the epic firework show; what is going on with this year’s event?
I’ve been involved with Jubilee since 1983, and I can personally say that we have one of the best fireworks shows on the east coast! Zambelli Fireworks Internationale from New York always put on a spectacular show. It seems like you are so close to them you could probably feel the earth shake after each explosion.
What are some of the favorite rides that are returning to the Jubilee?
A lot of the regular carnival rides are returning… but what we are doing differently this year is separating the adult rides and the kiddie rides. All kiddie land ‘per se’ in one area of the park and the regular adult rides are in another.
What does the entertainment line-up look like?
I think the entertainment line-up is fantastic this year! Starting Friday night we have a band called Black White Blues featuring Girls Night Out, and they are a great jazz group that plays top 40 hits, the Supremes, they’ll play anything and everything.
Saturday night we have Third World, which is a reggae band that plays along the lines of Bob Marley. They are a fantastic group as well.
Sunday we have Lonestar, who is celebrating their 20th anniversary! The original lead singer, Richie Mcdonald, will be present.
Overall it’s a great weekend of entertainment!
Are there any other features you can share with us?
This year we are very fortunate to have Commonwealth of Virginia’s L-O-V-E letters. The big ‘ole 6-7ft letters. We are very fortunate to get one of the traveling shows to make a stop here at the Chesapeake Jubilee, and basically it’s a photo opp for everyone! Virginia is for lovers and it’s just an outstanding added attraction to this year’s event.
