The running of the Chincoteague ponies is July 25, and hrScene is here to give you the information you need.

If you aren’t familiar with the event, it consists of several different phases. Although some have already occurred, here’s what you can still join in on.

Wednesday, July 25 4 a.m. | The Pony Swim | Veterans Memorial Park

After rounding up the ponies the past few days, “Saltwater Cowboys” will direct the ponies through water from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island. There they will be paraded down Main Street to the carnival grounds, where the auction will be held Thursday morning.

Thursday, July 26 8 a.m. | The Pony Auction | Carnival Grounds

The Pony Auction serves two purposes. First, the auction helps to control the overall size of the herd, keeping it from growing too large. Secondly, the auction is a fundraiser for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

Friday, July 27 | The Swim Back to Assateague | Carnival Grounds

The adult ponies will then be herded back across the water into the wild, where they will remain until next year!
