City Closings for Labor Day 2018

Here’s a list of city offices and services that will be closed or changed for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3.

All City of Chesapeake offices, courts and community centers will be closed in observance of Labor Day.

Chesapeake public libraries will be closed on both Sunday, Sept. 2, and Monday, Sept. 3. Library book drops will remain open for the return of materials.

There will be no changes to trash and recycling collection schedules, as there are no regular pick-ups on Mondays. The City’s Visitor Center, located at 1224 Progressive Drive, will be open regular hours throughout the holiday weekend.

All offices and facilities will resume normal operating hours on Tuesday, Sept. 4.


City schools and most city offices and services will be closed Monday for Labor Day. There will also be no trash or yard waste collection. Monday’s collection will be made on Wednesday, Sept. 5. For their complete list of closings, click here. 

Isle of Wight County

All city offices in Isle of Wight will be closed Monday, Sept. 3. All town offices of Smithfield will also be closed for the holiday.

James City County

James City County offices, facilities, services, libraries and courts will observe the following schedule for Labor Day:

County offices: Closed Monday, Sept. 3.
James City County Recreation Center and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center: Closed Monday, Sept. 3.
Convenience Centers and Garbage Transfer Station: Closed Monday, Sept. 3.
Curbside Recycling: No change to pick-up schedule.
Libraries: Closed Sunday and Monday, Sept. 2 and 3.
Courts: Closed Monday, Sept. 3.
All County Parks are open. Some parks have stores/offices:

  • Freedom Park Store/Office: Closed Monday, Sept. 3.
  • Chickahominy Riverfront Park Store/Office: Open regular hours.
  • James City County Marina Store/Office: Open regular hours.
  • Little Creek Reservoir Park Store/Office: Open regular hours.
Newport News

Newport News city offices and libraries will be closed Monday, Sept. for Labor Day.

All garbage, recycling and bulk waste collections for the week will be delayed one day, i.e., Monday’s collections will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday’s on Wednesday, Wednesday’s on Thursday, and Thursday’s on Friday. Recovery Operations Center (i.e., landfill) – closed Monday, Sept. 3

Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (serves the residents of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County): open for adoptions 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Labor Day; lobby open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for owner surrenders, reclaims and stray drop offs.


The City of Norfolk’s government offices, including City Hall and all libraries, will be closed on Monday, Sept. 3 in observance of Labor Day. The closures include the offices of the Commissioner of the Revenue and the City Treasurer. Offices will reopen at regular business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court will also be closed on Monday, Sept. 3, and will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Beaches will be open normal operating hours. Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center’s outdoor pool will be open 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Chesterfield outdoor pool will be open from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. on Monday. Outdoor swimming pools and splash pads will close for the season on Tuesday, Sept. 4 and beach lifeguards will go off duty. All other Recreation, Parks and Open Space facilities, including indoor swimming pools and the Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center, will be closed Monday and will reopen on Tuesday.

Requests for bulk waste collection on Tuesday, Sept. 4, must be made before 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. To schedule bulk waste collection, call the Norfolk Cares Center at (757) 664-6510 or fill out a request online. The Household Hazardous Waste and E-waste site on Pineridge Road will close on Monday. Norfolk residents can drop-off unwanted E-waste seven days a week/24 hours per day at the Division of Towing and Recovery located at 1188-A Lance Road.


The municipal offices of the City of Portsmouth, including Portsmouth Public Library and all city
recreation centers, will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 3.

There will be no garbage, recycling, or bulk collections on Monday, Sept. 3. All Monday routes will be collected on Wednesday, Sept. 5. For more information about garbage,

The Portsmouth Visitor Center, located at 6 Crawford Parkway, will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The Children’s Museum of Virginia, located at 221 High Street, will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information, visit childrensmuseumva.comThe Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center, and Lightship PORTSMOUTH will open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Visit or for more information. Also, these two museums offer free admission to active duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day 2018 as participants in the Blue Star Families Program.

The Portsmouth Community Library Museum will be closed on Labor Day.

The Splash Park will be open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. through the last day of the season, Sunday, Sept. 2. Cavalier Manor Pool and SportsPlex Pool are open from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
through the last day of the season, Sunday, Sept. 2.

On Labor Day, the public parks will be open from dawn to dusk with no attendants on duty.


Suffolk City offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 3 in observance of Labor Day. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, Sept.  4 at 8:30 a.m.

Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash as scheduled next week. TFC Recycling will also conduct their normal recycling collection routes. Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. The Southeastern Public Safety Authority (SPSA) Suffolk Transfer Station will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3. The Regional Landfill be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3.

Suffolk Transit will be closed on Monday, Sept.3. Operations will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

All Suffolk Parks & Recreation Joint Use Recreation Facilities will be closed Monday, Sept. 3. The East Suffolk Recreation Center and Whaleyville Community Center will be closed on Monday. The Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administration Office will be closed on Monday.

Suffolk’s four major parks (Lone Star Lakes, Constant’s Wharf, Sleepy Hole, Bennett’s Creek) will remain open Monday, Sept. 3; however, no park attendant will be on duty. Cypress Park & Pool will close for the Summer season on Sunday, Sept. 2.

The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed Monday, Sept. 3.

All Suffolk City Libraries (Morgan Memorial, North Suffolk, Chuckatuck) will be closed Monday, Sept. 3.

The Suffolk Tourism Visitor Center will remain open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3. The Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum will be open Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Suffolk Executive Airport Terminal will be unmanned Monday. The field and self-service fuel island will remain open during this time. Suffolk BBQ at the Airport will be open Monday, Sept. 3.

Virginia Beach

The following Virginia Beach facilities will be CLOSED Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of Labor Day:

  • All City of Virginia Beach offices
  • All Virginia Beach community recreation centers
  • All Virginia Beach public libraries
  • Only TCC/City Joint-Use Library will be closed Sept. 1, 2 & 3
  • All Virginia Beach city public schools and administration offices
  • Francis Land House, Lynnhaven House, Thoroughgood House and Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Museum
  • Sandler Center for the Performing Arts administrative offices and Box Office
  • Virginia Beach Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courts and Clerk’s Offices
  • Virginia Beach City Landfill & Resource Recovery Center
  • Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office
  • Virginia Beach Convention Center administrative offices
  • Virginia Beach Public Health Department

The following facilities are OPEN to the public, Monday, Sept. 3, during the following hours:

  • All Virginia Beach city parks and park facilities – 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Virginia Beach Farmers Market Office Closed – Market Vendors Open – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Visitor Center on the Chesapeake Bay Center at First Landing – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Visitor Center Information Kiosks at 24th & 17th streets – 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Visitor Information Center – 2100 Parks Ave. – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City offices will be closed for the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 3. This includes all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street. The Quarterpath Recreation Center is currently closed for maintenance and will re-open Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Garbage Collection – will be delayed one day. Regularly scheduled Monday collection is rescheduled to Tuesday, Sept. 4 and regularly scheduled Tuesday collection will be Wednesday, Sept. 5.

All City parks will be open including Waller Mill Park and all recreation/water activities.

Need to pay a City bill when offices are closed? A 24-hour bill payment drop box is located on the front of the Municipal Building, 401 Lafayette Street for City transactions. Payments made on Monday, Sept. 3 will not be posted until Tuesday, Sept. 4. You can also pay City bills online at
