One of the best things about living in Hampton Roads is being so close to so many diverse and interesting cities. You don’t have to venture too far from your home town to visit a whole other town with a completely different personality, events, and activities.
This is a look into the awesome city that is Newport News. For you southsiders, it’s worth a trip through the HRBT. For everyone else, jump on 64 and check out the delights that this city has to offer. You’ll be glad you did!
Their Restaurant Week lasts for three weeks. Where most cities give residents one quick week to scramble and take advantage of deals at their favorite restaurants and places they’ve always wanted to try, Newport News gives citizens and visitors plenty of time to find their new favorite restaurants. You have until February 6th for this round, so happy eating!
Many cities have races, but the One City Marathon Weekend in Newport News is really something special. There’s a marathon, sure, but the whole weekend of March 11-13 is filled with fun for everyone. That includes expos, family fit & fun day, and a party at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center.
While compiling the Classical Music in Hampton Roads guide, I was continually impressed with the lineup at the Ferguson Center. If you haven’t looked lately, you should check it out. There are amazing stage shows on the calendar next to speakers you can’t miss.
The Mariner’s Museum and The Virginia Living Museum are both so awesome that I couldn’t leave one out. These museums are both great for families and adults alike, featuring incredible nautical history and a close look at the natural world, respectively. They both have regular programs for people of all ages, too.
Last but not least is the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. In addition to a wonderful selection of classes and amazing shows featuring local artists, they also invite the community in once a month with free admission weekend on the first weekend of every month. It’s a great opportunity to check out the galleries, get creative with your kids in the Kids Gallery, and get your own creative juices flowing.
This just scratches the surface of reasons to love Newport News. What are your favorite things about this city? Did we miss anything? Please let us know! Email us: firstname.lastname@example.org
