Four-legged Firefighter Honored for Keen Sense of Smell

For the first time, a four-legged firefighter will be honored at the Virginia Beach Fire Department’s annual award ceremony Wednesday night.

Sadie is the only Accelerant Detecting Canine in Hampton Roads. She, and her human partner, Investigator Alana Cooper, will receive the Commendation Ribbon.

Sadie’s not even four years old yet, but has already investigated more than 170 suspicious fire scenes across Virginia and as far away as the U.S. Virgin Islands. She has the amazing ability to detect ignitable liquids at these scenes and has helped fire investigators locate and collect evidence in arson investigations. In fact, her keen sense of smell has been accurate almost 90 percent of the time.

This year’s ceremony is being held at Landstown High School on Concert Drive. It starts at 7 p.m.

In addition to the first four-legged award recipient, the Virginia Beach Firefighter of the Year will be recognized and several firefighters will receive the Medal of Honor and Lifesaving Medals for a dramatic water rescue in Sandbridge last year.

If you can’t make it, but wish you could, the Virginia Beach Fire Department plans on streaming the ceremony live on their Facebook page beginning at 7 p.m.
