This year’s theme is, “Continuing the Conversation: Mental Health Matters.”
Guests will be able to take part in workshops throughout the day dealing with autism, suicide prevention, military resources and, for the third year in a row, mental health.
“We create a safe space at this conference, so they can talk about the stigma of mental health. They can talk about their kids or family members and feel safe about it. At the same time they’re learning all about the resources in our community,” said Penny Sanchez, Executive Director.
For the first time ever, there will be a male keynote speaker. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels from the famous hip hop group trio Run DMC will discuss his struggles with mental health.
“To have a black male stand in front of everyone and say ‘I too hid behind the stigma. I didn’t want to be called crazy.’ We’re going to see all the things we’re talking about in our workshops in one person. The good news is, he’s in recovery and he had a lot of women in his life who helped him get to recovery,” said Sanchez.
The 11th Annual Women’s Wellness Celebration is taking place Friday, October 26 beginning at 8 a.m. Individual tickets to attend are $50.
