Monday, July 4, 4:45 p.m. | 1776 | Kimball Theater
This American musical film showcases the days leading up to July 4, 1776. Continental Congress member John Adams (William Daniels) and Benjamin Franklin (Howard Da Silva) convince Thomas Jefferson (Ken Howard) to draft the Declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic while they try to persuade the rest of Congress to support independence. While depressing messages describing one military disaster after another arrive from none other than George Washington, the businessmen, landowners, and slave-holders in Congress must decide the fate of Washington’s army: a single “nay” vote could forever defeat independence. Large portions of spoken and sung dialogue are taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants.
