A new fitness program is coming to Newport News schools aimed at keeping kids healthy. Local group, Flat-Out Events, is implementing a running program titled; Students Run the Streets.
According to Flat-Out, the program is the first of its kind in Hampton Roads. Heritage High and Huntington Middle will be the first schools to host the initiative starting this fall.
Students will learn how to train for a 10k to achieve their fitness goals. Five community race evens will also go down, with practice twice a week. Volunteers from the community will act as coaches and running leaders.
Participants will be given two pairs of proper running shoes, running apparel, training plans, water bottles, entries to five races and transportation to those races from the schools. Donations are also be accepted to help Students Run the Street with costs.
The program is free and open to all students.
