Many of us watch Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on the 4th of July, but did you know that one of the thousands of people attending this weekend’s Harborfest will qualify to head up to Coney Island to compete in the annual display of glorious gorging?
And that guy might be Ray Vittum. The 20-year-old ODU student is competing for the first time on Sunday.
He got into competitive eating the good old fashioned way; by indulging in 24 all-you-can-eat pancakes. He’s switching it up on Sunday with hopes of winning a ticket to Coney Island.
So how many hot dogs is Ray shooting for? “I’m hoping for 30s,” he told me. “30s would be strong.”
Cheer Ray on yourself at the Official Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest Qualifer. It’s happening on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on the main stage.

Good luck to all the competitors!
