Meet Liberty: Colonial Williamsburg’s First Mascot

There’s a new dog in town, and she’s all about history!

Meet Liberty, the first mascot to ever represent Colonial Williamsburg.

She’s a historic breed known as a Briard, and there’s a reason for that choice. According to historical legend, Thomas Jefferson wanted to give Washington a pair of “French Shepherd’s Dogs” which historians believe to be Briards. Historical record doesn’t say whether Washington ever actually received the dogs, however, so Colonial Williamsburg is making sure the legacy is complete.

Together with her master General George Washington, Liberty is making history by leading the Duke of Gloucester Street (DoG Street… get it?) dog parade on September 19 to benefit the Heritage Humane Society.

More than 600 local dogs are already signed up to be part of the parade. It’s 10:00 a.m. this Saturday, September 19. There will be a ton of fun things to do for you and your four legged friend.
