Here’s a list of city offices and services that will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 28.

In observance of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, all City offices, courts and community centers will be closed on Monday, May 28. All Chesapeake Public Libraries will be closed on Sunday, May 27 and Monday, May 28. There will be no changes to trash or recycling collection schedules.
Normal operating schedules will resume on Tuesday, May 29. Residents who need more information should call the Customer Contact Center at (757) 382-CITY between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or visit the homepage to make a request 24 hours a day.
City schools and most city offices will be closed Monday, May 28, for Memorial Day. There will be no regular recycling, bulk trash or yard waste collection. Monday’s collection will be made Wednesday, May 30.
James City County
James City County government offices, facilities, libraries and courts will follow the schedule listed below on May 28 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday:

Newport News City offices will be closed on Monday, May 28, in observance of Memorial Day. This includes City Hall, City offices at City Center at Oyster Point, Newport News Waterworks’ customer services offices, the Public Works Operations Center, the Recovery Operation Center (formerly the Compost and Drop Off Facility – landfill) and both locations of the Treasurer’s Office and Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office (City Hall and Denbigh).
All Newport News public libraries will be closed on Sunday, May 27, and Monday, May 28 in observance of the holiday.
All garbage, recycling and bulk waste collections for the week will be delayed one day, i.e., Monday’s collections will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday’s collection will be on Wednesday, Wednesday’s collection will be on Thursday and Thursday’s collection will be on Friday.

The City of Norfolk’s government offices, including City Hall, will close on Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day. The closures include the offices of the Commissioner of the Revenue, the City Treasurer, the Norfolk Courthouse and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Offices will reopen at regular business hours on Tuesday, May 29.
All Norfolk Public Libraries and all recreation centers, including pools, will close Monday, May 28.
Requests for bulk waste collection on Tuesday, May 29, must be made before 3 p.m. on Friday, May 25. Call the Norfolk Cares Center at (757) 664-6510 or fill out a request online at www.norfolk.gov and click on the Request Tracker.
The Household Hazardous Waste and E-waste site on Pineridge Road will close on Saturday, May 26 and remain closed through Monday, May 28, 2018. Norfolk residents can drop-off unwanted E-waste seven days a week/24 hours per day at the Division of Towing and Recovery located at 1188-A Lance Road.
The municipal offices of the City of Portsmouth, including Portsmouth Public Library and all Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services recreation centers, will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 28.
There will be no garbage, bulk, or recycling collections on Monday, May 28. All Monday routes will be collected on Wednesday, May 31st. For more information, please call the Division of Waste Management at 393-8663.
All public parks will be open from dawn to dusk on Memorial Day. The recreation centers will be closed.
In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, Suffolk City offices will be closed Monday, May 28. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, May 30, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. The city observes all state-designated holidays. Memorial Day is considered a holiday for the Commonwealth of Virginia and all State offices are closed on this day.
Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash as scheduled next week. TFC Recycling will also conduct their normal recycling collection routes. Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. The Southeastern Public Safety Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk will be open Monday, May 28 from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. The Regional Landfill will be closed on Monday, May 28.
Suffolk Transit will not operate on Monday, May 28 due to the holiday.
All Suffolk Parks & Recreation joint use recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, May 28 with no before and after school care and no athletic practices scheduled. The East Suffolk Recreation Center and Whaleyville Community Center will be closed Monday, May 28. The Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administrative Office will be closed Monday, May 28.
Suffolk’s four major parks – Lone Star Lakes, Constant’s Wharf, Sleepy Hole, and Bennett’s Creek – will remain open Monday, May 28, however, no park attendant will be on duty.
The following Virginia Beach facilities will be closed Monday, May 28, in observance of Memorial Day:
- All City of Virginia Beach offices
- All Virginia Beach community recreation centers
- All Virginia Beach public libraries on Sunday, May 27 and Monday, May 28
- Francis Land House, Lynnhaven House, Thoroughgood House and the Princess Anne County Training School/ Union Kempsville High School Museum
- Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, administration office and Box Office
- Tidewater Community College/City Joint-Use Library on May 26, 27 and 28
- Virginia Beach Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courts and clerk’s offices
- Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office
- Virginia Beach Convention Center administrative offices
- Virginia Beach City Landfill &and Resource Recovery Center
- Virginia Beach Public Health Department
Many City offices will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 28. This includes all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street, Williamsburg Regional Library administrative offices in the Stryker Center, the Quarterpath Recreation Center and the Williamsburg James City County Courthouse on Monticello Avenue.
The following will observe adjusted operating hours:
- Williamsburg Library – closed Sunday, May 27 – Monday, May 28.
- Garbage Collection – will be delayed one day. Regularly scheduled Monday collection will be picked-up on Tuesday, and regularly scheduled Tuesday collection will be picked-up on Wednesday.
