This summer, the kiddies will have a whole new area to play in at the Virginia Zoo…a Nature Play area!

The Zoo broke ground on their new Nature Play area on Thursday, which the Zoo describes as an unstructured, one-acre area that will incorporate surrounding landscape and vegetation.

It will be located next to the Zoo’z Flora Point section, and will feature tree stumps and pieces for climbing and jumping, a sandbox for digging, a sensory walk, a willow tunnel and a bamboo maze.

The Zoo says the Nature Play area, once completed, will be open to the public daily and it can be used by the Education Department.

Several grants from organizations, including Rotary District 7600, Norfolk Rotary Charities, Inc., Norfolk Sunrise Rotary, the Virginia Beach Rotary Club Foundation, Wells Fargo and Target, have made the Nature Play area possible, according to the Zoo. The City of Norfolk donated new bathrooms as well.

The Zoo says there will be a Family Volunteer Day on May 4 where volunteers can assist with a variety of projects, including putting together parts of the play area.
