The Latest Running News and Notes from Running Reporter, Jon “Flex” Leiding
WHERE DO WE START?
Hey Hampton Roads Runners! Summer is still hanging on and even though the Back to School ads are out and Tax-Free weekends are behind us, there are always some blazing hot times to be seen in the “757”.
Let’s get dirty from the start with the ASYMCA Mud Run at Little Creek last Saturday. My DJ friend, Dominic Cummings, showed me pics and video of nearly a thousand people making the Little Creek event HUGE! Even with the obstacles, including dirt and mud, Gavin Soscia was the Overall Winner of this 8K event in 36:58. Race director, Brian Sagedy must have pulled out all the great competitors for this as Ashley Hay led the Ladies in 41:41. I ran this race one time and think I threw away my dirty, gritty shoes and clothes after the event. Wait- that didn’t sound right. I think I meant “when I got home. It’s a great event and if you were there, I am certain you had a blast.
From the Beach to the Peninsula, the CDR Superhero 5K at the Williamsburg Vineyards sped off in this past Saturday. Christopher Crowder was “Super”, crossing the finish line in 16:04. That’s a 5:12 per mile pace. Jessica Riggs was a “Wonder” winning for the women with a 19:56. Shout out to Greg Dawson, the fastest Masters runner that day was a “Flash” in 18:34. You did catch the references, right?
Back on the Southside, the Spartyka Fallen Heroes 5K paid tribute to this year’s fallen hero, SSGT Pat Hamburger. Runners raised funds by participating in the event at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. No results were available but, I had some friends who did run say they had a good time for a good cause. Great Job, Shawna Leigh and J.J.!
SO WHAT ABOUT THIS WEEKEND?
Let’s feed your racing huger. Saturday morning, The Tidewater Striders have their Strider mile speeds away at Tallwood High School. Fast is the word of the day there. Race walkers and Runners go at it and be prepared for some “Fast times”.
Out at the Oceanfront, The 9th Annual Surfer’s Healing 5K still has some availability left. Check this link to get registered: surfershealingvb.org/surfers-healing-5k. The Race starts at 4th Street, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. Get your morning going with a good run on the Boardwalk. You might even see a dolphin or two swimming by.
My Friends on the Peninsula would give me grief if I didn’t let you know about the 8th Annual Boys & Girls Club Smart Smiles 5K at the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News. The Mariner’s Museum course is one of the more beautiful runs in the area. Get in for a great cause at bagclub.com/smartsmiles5k. You can do it!
If you want something different, this is the race for you: The Rush to the Goal 5K at the Sportsplex in Virginia Beach. It’s an early evening run. The Mile run begins at 6pm and the 3.1 mile run goes at 6:30pm. If you ran earlier in the day and want some more, here’s your chance to “Double Up” and support the VA RUSH Soccer Girls and Boys programs. You can even just go to the “After Party” for just $10! Rumour has it a Dunk tank will be there with Coaches eager to sit in for a good time. Check their site to get in: varushboosterclub.com/rush-to-the-goal-5k.html.
