Norfolk Public Library announced Horace C. Downing Branch Library in the Berkley section of the city is reopening at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18.
The opening comes after $700,000 in renovations, including new carpeting, furniture, shelving, paint, bathroom fixtures, signage inside and outside, bike rack, ADA accessibility, awnings, and new technology. The new technology includes self-check, a digital display board, projector and screen in the meeting room along with new computers.
The branch first opened in April 1921 and was called Berkley Branch.
In honor of the late Berkley civic leader, Horace Cornelius Downing, in June 1999 the Berkley Branch was renamed the Horace C. Downing Branch. Horace was a Norfolk native, known as “Mayor of Berkley” for his civic leadership and devotion to his community.
