One of the best things to happen in Norfolk in the last decade was the creation of O’Connor Brewing Company. Craft brewers were on the rise around the country and we just had two within a 60 mile radius. Kevin O’Connor had a vision and a plan of producing fine ales in the Mermaid City. And on St. Patrick’s Day 2010, the first pint of Green Can was poured at A.W. Shucks.
Fast forward five years later and you can pretty much find an O’Connor brew in every restaurant and grocery store in the 757. This weekend celebrates the 1st anniversary in their new building off 24th Street with O’Connoroo 2015. After an overwhelming attendance last year, this year’s event has been expanded to two days. Double the beer, double the food, double the fun and, of course, double the music.
A lot of great bands and Live Music Friday alums will be entertaining the crowds on their great indoor and outdoor stages. Richmond’s Murphy’s Kids kick things off outside at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with funky jazz band Sharkophagus to follow. Also playing are Live Music Friday’s DJP and MrT, Mike Lawson and Mimsy, The Vir, The Framers and Kelsie McNair. A plethora of great food trucks will keep your bellies full and lots of family entertainment. Everything kicks off Saturday at noon and goes until 9 p.m. and Sunday noon – 6 p.m. Get out there and support your local brewery and local music.
