The old Bent Fork location on Granby has new, spicy life in it in the form of locally-sourced Mexican food.
Umo just opened and features fresh ingredients and a small-town feel in Norfolk. Umo’s Gabe Baesen told me that the smoker fires up every day at 7:30 a.m. full of brisket, pork, chicken, and wings. Besides making the surrounding blocks smell delicious, the proteins come out tender and delicious and perfect for white corn tortillas.
Umo tries to do as much in-house as possible, including their own flash-fried chips and guacamole, both of which are to die for. The onions are pickled in house, the chimichurri is made in the tiny kitchen, and the margarita mix, which is a few steps up from anything neon-green and bottled, is lovingly made in house too.
The drink menu leans on beers and craft cocktails, and there will always be five Virginia drafts on tap. The ancho-spiced salt in the cocktails adds a bright kick, so be ready!
Their patio is dog and kid friendly and is perfect for a casual summer evening or date night.
