Veterans Day Closings | 2018

Here are the Veterans Day closings and schedule changes for each Hampton Roads city.


Chesapeake City government offices, courts and community centers will be closed on Monday, Nov. 12, in observance of Veterans Day. Chesapeake libraries will be closed both Sunday and Monday, Nov. 11 and 12. There will be no changes to trash or recycling collection schedules and the City’s Visitors Center will be open normal hours.

Schools closed for the holiday.


Schools in Hampton will be open on Monday, Nov. 12, but most city offices will be closed including the yard waste site, libraries, courts, health department and clinics, social services, Air Power museum Park and the Charles Taylor Visual Arts Center.

There will be no refuse, recycling or bulk items collected on Monday, Nov. 12. Collections will be made Wednesday, Nov. 14. The landfill will be open on Monday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be no street sweeping on Monday, Nov. 12. The next street sweep will be on Monday, Nov. 17.

Golf courses, the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier, Bluebird Gap Farm, Sandy Bottom Nature Park and the Hampton History Museum will be open on Monday, Nov. 12.

The following community centers will be open from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12th for all currently enrolled participants of the after school programs: Fort Monroe, Little England, Northampton, Therapeutic Recreation, West Hampton and Y.H. Thomas. All other community centers will be closed.

Newport News

Newport News Public Schools are in session this Veterans Day.

City offices, the landfill (Recovery Operations Center) and libraries will be closed on Monday, Nov. 12. Garbage, recycling and bulk waste collection will be delayed one day, i.e. Monday’s collections will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday’s on Wednesday, Wednesday’s on Thursday, and Thursday’s on Friday.

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter will be open for adoptions on Monday, Nov. 12 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.


Norfolk Public Schools are closed Monday in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.

The City of Norfolk’s government offices, including City Hall and all libraries, will close on Monday, Nov. 12 in observance of Veterans Day. The closures include the offices of the Commissioner of the Revenue and the City Treasurer.

The Norfolk Courthouse will also close on Monday, Nov. 12.

Requests for bulk waste collection on Tuesday, Nov. 13 must be made before 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9. To schedule bulk waste collection, call the Norfolk Cares Center at (757) 664-6510 or fill out a request online at and click on the Request Tracker. The Household Hazardous Waste and E-waste site on Pineridge Road will close on Monday, Nov. 12. Norfolk residents can drop-off unwanted E-waste seven days a week/24 hours per day at the Division of Towing and Recovery located at 1188-A Lance Road.


Portsmouth Public Schools are closed on Veterans Day.

The municipal offices of the City of Portsmouth, including Portsmouth Public Library, all city recreation centers and the 6 to Six Program and sites will be closed in observance of Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 12.

There will be no trash, recycling or bulk collections on Monday, Nov. 12. The Monday routes will be collected on Wednesday, Nov. 14. For more information, please call the Division of Waste

Portsmouth Museums that will be open on Veterans Day: The Children’s Museum of Virginia, located at 221 High St., will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Lightship Portsmouth, located at the foot of Water and London Streets, will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Portsmouth Museums that will be closed on Veterans Day: The Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center is currently closed during the installation of the Annual Winter Wonderland; and, the Gallery Shop will be closed on Veterans Day. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum is currently closed for renovations.  The Portsmouth Colored Community Library Museum will be closed.

Portsmouth parks will be open from dawn to dusk.


Suffolk Public Schools will be closed in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.

Suffolk City offices will be closed Monday, Nov. 12.

Suffolk Public Works Department will pick up trash as scheduled next week. TFC Recycling will also conduct their normal recycling collection routes. Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12. The SPSA Regional Landfill will be open from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12.

Suffolk Transit will operate as scheduled on Monday, Nov. 12.

East Suffolk Recreation Center, Whaleyville Community Center and the Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administration Office will be closed on Monday. Suffolk Parks & Recreation Joint Use Recreation Facilities will be closed Monday..

Suffolk’s four major parks (Lone Star Lakes, Constant’s Wharf, Sleepy Hole, Bennett’s Creek) will remain open Monday, Nov. 12; however, no park attendant will be on duty.  All Suffolk City Libraries (Morgan Memorial, North Suffolk, Chuckatuck) will be closed. The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed Monday.

The Suffolk Tourism Visitor Center will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday. The Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday.

The Suffolk Executive Airport Terminal will be unmanned Monday, Nov. 12. The field and self-service fuel island will remain open during this time. Suffolk BBQ at the Airport will be open Monday, Nov.12.

Virginia Beach

In observance of Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 12, the following Virginia Beach serves will be closed:

All Virginia Beach community recreation centers will be open Monday, Nov. 12, but closed on Sunday, Nov. 11.
All Virginia Beach public libraries will be closed Sunday, Nov. 11 and Monday, Nov. 12, however the Joint Use Library (1700 College Crescent) will be closed Sunday, Nov. 11 and will be open Monday, Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Joint Use Library – 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Sandler Center for the Performing Arts administrative offices – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and box office – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Virginia Beach Farmers Market Vendors – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Farmers Market Office – closed

Williamsburg/James City County

WJCC schools will be open on Monday, Nov. 12.

City offices will be closed on Monday, Nov. 12 in observance of Veterans Day. This includes all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street, the Quarterpath Recreation Center and the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse on Monticello Avenue.

Garbage collection will not be affected. Monday and Tuesday pick up will remain on schedule.

Waller Mill Park will observe normal operating hours. Williamsburg Regional Library branches will be open.

A convenient 24-hour bill payment drop box is located on the front of the Municipal Building, 401 Lafayette Street for City transactions and payments can be made online. Drop box payments made on Monday, Nov. 12 will not be posted until the following day.
